Are Civil Partnerships Marriages? | |
This is the text of a lecture I gave to the annual conference of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement in April 2004. I have re-issued it (November 2010) because of its treatment of the question whether civil partnerships are marriages. In 2004 LGCM was preoccupied with the legislative proposals for civil partnerships in the UK. Should they be welcomed as a great step forward, or resisted because they fell short of the full matrimonial status to which some lesbian and gay people aspired? I suggested a pragmatic welcome, but insisted that the Christian marital tradition was broad and deep enough to recognise the partnerships as marriages. The rest of the lecture is devoted to an analysis of the Church of England's seriously inadequate report Some Issues in Human Sexuality which had been published in December 2003. |
