Christian Perspectives for Education | |
In the 1980s I was one of a few theologians who called for, and tried to contribute to, a 'theology of education'. The subject of education was then divided into the sociology, psychology, philosophy and history of education. We surmised (wrongly as it turned out) that Church Colleges, all of whom had a stake in education and in 'Church-relatedness', would welcome this new addition to Education Studies. The sub-title of Christian Perspectives for Education was 'A Reader in the Theology of Education'. Leslie Francis and I chose 34 articles which brought theological thinking to topics such as educational aims, Church schools and colleges, cultural pluralism, indoctrination, religious education, religious, moral, personal and social education, and spirituality. Authors included John Hull, Lesslie Newbigin, John Haldane, Jeff Astley and ourselves. The second edition of the book was released in 1999 as a set text for a Masters course in Theology and Education. |
